Andes Northern Sierra running tour in Ecuador – 2 to 6 days

The Ecuadorian highland is wonderful in its landscape and culture. The routes that we will run in the Northern Sierra running tour go through mountains, very hilly roads, green and dry valleys, old farms “haciendas” and indigenous towns. You are going to live six days of adventure that will mark your life, for the strength in your body and your spirit.

We will also visit, during the active breaks, the countryside, the farm life, its people, and the famous fair of Otavalo.

This route requires experience in trail running due to the altitude, but can be handled by an active runner. The more prepared you are for a tour, the more fun you’ll have and the further you’ll be able to go.

General indications:

A seasoned runner will be able to complete each day’s run of any of the tours. The routes are designed to be adapted for any runner’s pace and desired distance.

The cost of each route includes transfer to and from the airport, daily road transportation related to group activities, reservations and accommodations in hotels and lodges, meals, running routes along with guides, travel area maps, communication devices, water, first aid gear and vehicle support. The longest trip will take four hours at the most.

It does not include airplane tickets or alternative transportation not considered in the tour. Spa and alcoholic beverages are not included.

Groups are relatively small, generally between 6 and 12 participants.

There is a possibility that the routes may be modified, regarding distances and variations in altimetry.

As always, the safety of runners and guests is a priority for the organization. We have explored the most scenic, diverse and safe trails for you to enjoy them.

We ask runners to take care of the environment. We all enjoy nature, the mountains, lakes, landscapes, and we suffer when we see garbage there. Keep your trash in your backpacks or hydration belts until you get to the hotel. Let’s consume rationally, reuse and recycle. Let’s avoid polluting products such as plastic bags and bottles.

Description of the Route:

Day 1 – Puembo

Fly into Quito Airport and transfer to Hotel in Puembo; if the flight is early there is the option of a visit to Old Town Quito, small hike to surrounding areas and dinner.

Day 2 – Zuleta

Early start to run in Chaquiñan from Tumbaco to Puembo. Breakfast and shower at hotel and 11am departure towards Zuleta Area. 1pm check-in at hotel La Merced Baja and lunch; open afternoon for activities (horseback riding, local crafts visit, relax and enjoyment)

Day 3 – Piman

Early start to run in Cochas, breakfast and showers at hotel. 11 am departure towards Piman. Possible visit to Ibarra and Yaguarcocha, check in at Piman and lunch. Open afternoon for hikes, pool, Spá, relaxing time and enjoyment + dinner.

Day 4 – Salinas de Ibarra

Early start to trail run around Piman, breakfast and showers at hotel, 12pm checkout. Possible visit to Chota, Mira or Salinas de Ibarra and check in to Hosteria San Francisco, lunch and open afternoon for horse back riding, spa, hot springs or relax + dinner.

Day 5 – Lago San Pablo

Early start to run the channel route, 9am breakfast and shower at hotel. 10am departure towards Cuicocha to hike around the crater + lunch. Check-in at Cusin, lunch and visit to Otavalo’s market + dinner.

Day 6 – Quito

Return to Quito, transfer to airport, end of tour.
